Singapore Airlines is the national flag carrier airline of Singapore. One of the best airlines in the world is Singapore Airlines.

Singapore Airlines was started in 1947 as Malayan Airways Limited or MAL. MAL's first service was from then-British Singapore to the current Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur. MAL was the first to use the Airspeed Consul, a small two-engine aircraft. Thus, the airline launched three services a week to Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh and Penang.

In 1948, Douglas DC-3 aircraft arrived at MAL's fleet. That same year, it launched services to Jakarta, Medan, Palembang, Saigon and Bangkok. By 1955, Malayan Airways began to grow with more Douglas DC-3 model aircraft. During the 1950s and '60s, aircraft such as the Douglas DC-4, Vickers Viscount, DH 106 Comet 4, and Lockheed L-1049 arrived at MAL.

After independence from the British in 1963, a new country called Malaysia was formed by annexing Malaya and Singapore. With this, Malayan Airways was renamed as Malaysian Airways Limited. In 1965, Borneo Airways merged with Malaysian Airways.

After seceding from Malaysia in 1965, Singapore became an independent country. Subsequently, in 1966, Malaysian Airways became Malaysia-Singapore Airlines or MSA and continued to be the flag carrier of both countries. Boeing 707s arrived on MSA's fleet in 1967, and Boeing 737s in 1969. MSA started service from Singapore to London in 1971. It was also MSA's first service to another continent.

In 1972, Malaysia-Singapore Airlines ceased operations for various reasons and merged into two separate airlines, the Malaysian Airlines System and the Singapore Airlines. Malaysia Airlines, the flag carrier of Malaysia today, was the Malaysian airline system of the day. As the assets held by Malaysia-Singapore Airlines were distributed, Singapore Airlines acquired the best routes, including seven Boeing 707s and five Boeing 707s. At the same time, the headquarters of MSA in Singapore became the headquarters of Singapore Airlines.

In 1973, Singapore Airlines acquired its first Boeing 747 aircraft. The Boeing 747-200B was operated to destinations in Europe, Australia and the United States. In 1977, Boeing 727 aircraft also arrived at Singapore Airlines. The first service using the Boeing 727 was on the Singapore-Manila route.

In 1977, Singapore Airlines leased the world's fastest aircraft, the Concorde Wetleys, from British Airways and operated the London-Singapore route via Bahrain. However, the service was suspended after three trips due to increased costs and a complaint from the Malaysian government against noise pollution.

In the 1980s, Singapore Airlines expanded its services to the US, Canada and some European cities. It was during this period that Airbus first landed on Singapore Airlines. In 1989, Singapore Airlines acquired the Boeing B747-400 model aircraft. In 1990, Singapore Airlines launched services to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban in South Africa.

In 1989, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, Tradewinds, was launched. It was later renamed Silk Air.

The Boeing 777 was the first aircraft to land on a Singapore Airlines flight in 1997. In 2001, a cargo airline called Singapore Airlines Cargo was launched, but in 2018 it ceased operations and transferred seven Boeing 747-400F aircraft in flight to Singapore Airlines.

In 2004, Singapore Airlines launched nonstop services from Singapore to Los Angeles and New York in the United States. These long-distance nonstop services with Airbus A340-500 aircraft were a record in aviation history.

In 2007, Singapore Airlines became the first airline to acquire the Airbus A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft. The A380 was first operated on the Singapore-Sydney route. Singapore Airlines has also set an example to the world by donating ticket charges for this service to charity.

On April 6, 2012, the last Boeing B-747 aircraft of Singapore Airlines retired after 40 years of service. The Boeing 787-10 model aircraft was launched in 2013 with orders from Singapore Airlines. These were delivered in 2018.

In 2012, Scoot, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, launched a low-cost airline. Later in 2017, it merged with Tiger Air Scoot, another major airline in Singapore. In 2018, SilkAir, another subsidiary, announced that it was going to merge with Singapore Airlines. The merger will be completed by 2021.

Singapore Airlines is one step ahead of any other airline in the world in terms of branding. One of them is the uniform of the air hostess of Singapore Airlines. The costumes of Singapore Airlines flight attendants are branded with the popular slogan 'Singapore Girl'. Singapore Airlines has repeatedly been named the world's best airline. Singapore Airlines was also voted the cleanest airline in the world by a 2019 survey.

This is the only time in history that a Singapore Airlines plane has been involved in a fatal accident. A crash at Taiwan International Airport on October 31, 2000 killed at least 83 people. According to a 2019 survey, Singapore Airlines is the sixth safest airline in the world.

Singapore Chunky Airport is the main hub of Singapore Airlines. Today, Singapore Airlines operates 66 international routes in 32 countries. Singapore Airlines also operates the longest nonstop service in the world. This flight on the Singapore-New York route covers a distance of 9534 miles in 18.30 hours.

As of September 2020, the major aircraft on the Singapore Airlines flight are Airbus A330, Airbus A350, Airbus A380, Boeing 777, Boeing 787-10 and Boeing 747-400F (Cargo).
